C3 buy seen helping free Apple from Google Maps

Apple Inc. has reportedly acquired a 3-D mapping startup named C3 Technologies in a move that may help it move away from using Google Maps for its mobile device software. Rumors that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) had bought the Swedish company have been circulating since August but the 9to5Mac blog said on Saturday it had confirmed the deal. It marks the third mapping company that Apple has acquired in as many years, beginning with Placebase in 2009 and Poly9 last year.
